Department of Computer Science Train Staff on CCMASS Implementation

The Department of Computer Science, FUT Babura, has organised a half day seminar themed User-
Centred Teaching and Learning Approach to CCMAS Implementation, at the Centre for Information
Technology (CIT), Temporary Campus, on Tuesday 10th September, 2024.

While welcoming participants from across all Departments, Dr. Khalid Haruna, Director CIT and HOD
Computer Science said the University is lucky to have Prof. Mansur Aliyu, a master trainer on
sabbatical from Sokoto State University, to especially take the new and older staff through the task
of mastering the philosophy of the new CCMAS curriculum.

The presenter, Prof. Aliyu entitled his presentation as SEMINAR ON USER-CENTRED TEACHING &
LEARNING. He pointed out that a critical change from the previous BMASS to the CCMASS
curriculum is the learner centred approach and the 30% local input allowed by the curriculum to
complete the 70% provided by the NUC.

The interesting presentation was divided into six sections. Section one, “Who Are You?” dealt with
the qualities teachers should present with: Respectful, friendly, honest, firmness, humble,
charismatic, presentable and with good communication skills. Section two, “First Day In Class”
guides lecturers to use their first contact with learners to introduce themselves and areas of
expertise; explain the course outline, contact period in and out of class, lab times; as well as chosen
learner evaluations (tests, projects, exams and the distribution of marks, thus setting teacher-
Learner relations on best international practices. Section three, “Class Control & Evaluation” advises
instructors to know their student’s background, intellect, understanding, skills, problems towards
creating a good learning interaction. Section four, “Curriculum Implementation” goes into the details
of delivering the learning in three parts – in terms of intended objectives, the course content and
laboratory work. Section five, delved into measuring outcomes, “Course Assessment &
Measurement” by discussing the distribution of marks between final examinations and continuous
assessments, projects and tests; while also discussing the 5-point grading system in Nigerian
universities and related details of designing questions and associated marking schemes. Finally in
section six the presenter harped on ensuring fairness in rewarding learners and tutors under the
heading “Appreciation & Rewards”.

In his closing remarks, the HOD Computer Science, Dr. Haruna appealed to the master trainer to
take-up permanent appointment with FUTB because the training need to be on a continuous basis
and it would be mandatory for all academic staff.
