The Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Babura, Prof. Sabo Ibrahim Birnin Kudu, has called on the new intake of the 2025/2026 academic session to prioritize acquiring relevant skills and knowledge that will prepare them for self-reliance and societal development.
Addressing students at the 4th Matriculation Ceremony held at the University’s Permanent Site on Tuesday, 24th March 2026, Prof. Birnin Kudu emphasized the university’s commitment to addressing societal challenges through quality education and research, aligning with its vision.
He advised students to be punctual to lectures, engage diligently in academic activities, and avoid harmful behaviours, noting that degrees are awarded based on learning and character. He also encouraged socialization, respect for staff and peers, and modest dressing.
The Chairman and Pro-Chancellor, Prof. Ignatius Onimawo Akhakhia, reiterated the Governing Council’s commitment to supporting the university’s growth, stating that the council recognizes the importance of strong leadership, sound governance, strategic vision, and collective responsibility in driving FUTB’s success.
The chairman outlined the council’s plans to promote policies and initiatives that will strengthen academic standards, enhance research output, improve infrastructure, and foster partnerships locally and internationally. He added that the council will advocate for resource mobilization, prudent financial management, and innovative approaches to institutional development.
He expressed the council’s vision for FUTB to become a globally recognized institution, producing innovative and entrepreneurial graduates who can drive national development through cutting-edge research and community engagement. “Our aim is to build a university that is responsive to societal needs, contributing to national development, and equipping graduates for the modern world,” he said.
The keynote speaker, Professor Abubakar Adamu Rasheed mni, MFR, a former Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission, praised FUTB’s leadership, describing them as a team with direction and character. He noted that although the university is young, it’s not entirely new to him. It belongs to a generation of institutions whose establishment he witnessed and, in some measure, helped facilitate during his tenure at the National Universities Commission. The creation of such universities, he said, was driven by a national aspiration to widen access, enhance relevance, and prepare a new generation for the complexities of a rapidly changing world.
He expressed confidence in the leadership of Pro Chancellor Professor Akhakhia, Vice Chancellor Professor Sabo Ibrahim Birnin Kudu, and Registrar Fatima Binta Mohammed mni, stating, “The presence of these leaders reassures me that this university has both direction and character. Its future is therefore very bright.”
Professor Rasheed urged incoming students to view their university education as a journey of self-discovery and growth, emphasizing the importance of discipline, curiosity, and integrity. He noted that FUTB students must be prepared to address global challenges through innovation, creativity, and technology, and urged them to see themselves as future engineers of change.
“Let the university shape your thinking, strengthen your character, and prepare you for a life of purpose and contribution,” he said, congratulating students on their matriculation.
Representing the Minister of Education, Hajiya Larai Nana Ahmed reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to FUTB’s growth and development, stating that the government will continue to invest in infrastructure, research, staff development, and student support services. She urged students to seize opportunities with determination and purpose, upholding values of integrity, diligence, respect, and excellence.
The 4th Matriculation Ceremony of FUT Babura concluded on a high note, with attendees exchanging pleasantries and enjoying the colorful event. The ceremony was graced by numerous dignitaries, security agencies, council members, staff, and students, making it a memorable occasion.
