The pioneer members of the Town and Gown Committee (TGC), of the University are expected to be proactive and solve problems that may arise in community relations before they manifest or grow big. This charge was given by the Vice chancellor, Prof. Sabo Ibrahim Birnin Kudu, while inaugurating the TGC at the Vice chancellors Conference Room, on Thursday 29th August, 2024, at the Temporary Campus.
Earlier, the VC had warmly welcomed members of the Committee that included the District Head of Babura, the Chief Imam, heads of security and representatives of Students and management.
Before formally inaugurating the committee which then went into a closed-door session, Prof. Birnin Kudu had spelled out the reason for setting up the Town and Gown Committee, particularly to promote mutual respect, understanding and cordial relations between the University Community and its host Community, as is the tradition all over the world.
The VC said globally Universities are set up for teaching, research and community service but the University, represented by the Gown, needs to understand the concerns and noble values of its host community, the Town, to be able to offer value addition service. He said although the institution is expected to offer employment and admission to the local community as per regulations, it also hopes to work closely with the TGC to live peacefully with it, by nipping in the bud potential fractious issues like herdsmen trespass and other issues of mutual concern.
