The Vice Chancellor, Prof Sabo Ibrahim Birnin Kudu has formally inaugurated the FUT Babura pioneer Students’ Representative Council (SRC), to be headed by Yahaya Hamidu Magem, a student of Cybersecurity as Chairman. The SRC has two Vice Chairpersons; a General Secretary with an Assistant; a Treasurer and Financial Secretary; a Welfare Officer and two PROs as well as Directors of Academic Affairs, Sports, Protocol and Socials.
In his address at the occasion, Prof Birnin Kudu recounted the history of the founding of the institution and the need to create a forum for students to dialogue with Management on issues of concern whenever they should arise. The VC advised the selected 15 leaders to be role models, provide purposeful and exemplary leadership, as well as contribute to all students achieving their goals. The DVC Prof. Bala Sidi Aliyu also gave leadership advice to members of the SRC.
The Dean Student Affairs, Dr. Ya’u Datti, who also spoke at the occasion expressed appreciation to the VC for his unwavering support and explained the rigorous process of selection of the leaders. “We sought out individuals who not only excelled academically but also demonstrated exemplary character”, he added.
While explaining that “the SRC will play a pivotal role in enhancing our campus life and student experience” through collaboration and mutual respect, the Dean gave the three key functions of the forum, as: facilitating communication, promoting Student engagement and advocating for Student interest
In his acceptance speech, the SRC Chairman, Yahaya Hamid Magem appreciated the tremendous efforts of the VC, principal officers and staff in making the institution conducive for learning amidst challenges. He promised on behalf of the SRC to “represent the rest of the students” and “to deliver to the expectations of the institution”. “We also promise to be law-abiding, cooperative and supportive in your quest to promote good characters in the university”, he added. The General Secretary, Ibraheem Ojediran Adekunle also spoke, pledging to serve with dedication and honour.
While promising to help build a vibrant campus community where “every student feels valued and supported”, the SRC chairman mentioned some urgent problems facing the students that need attention as: transportation to the campuses, leaking rooms at the male hostel, need for fumigation, provision of free Wi- Fi to students to ease learning, office accommodation for the SRC, concrete seats in ventilated spaces at the permanent campus, large metal refuse bins for refuse disposal, lightening the campuses and hostels, access road for engineering students, and a functional engineering laboratory.
